Why “Drunk Like a Pole”?

Because Napoleon said it first.

At Somosierra, in 1808, a Polish light cavalry squadron charged a fortified mountain pass held by Spanish artillery: uphill, into the guns, in a few minutes. Told afterwards that the Poles had been drinking, Napoleon is said to have replied that he wished all his troops were drunk like the Poles.

Whether he put it in exactly those words, nobody can prove. Kraków has never let a shaky source ruin a good story, and neither will this tour.
